Ecological wind turbine cleaning system

When wind turbine component failures occur, particularly in the gearboxes, polluting oil spills are generated down the length of the wind turbine tower. These incidents lead to serious environmental problems, as this oil normally leaks through the yaw ring to the outside of the tower, spilling down its surface.

To remedy this environmental damage, we have developed an efficient ecological cleaning system that allows cleaning on wind turbine towers with hub heights of up to 90 metres.

WHAT DOES OUR ECO-CLEANING SYSTEM CONSIST OF?

High-level access platforms

In order to carry out the cleaning of wind turbines, we use specialised machinery for elevating personnel to great heights.

We use truck-mounted mobile elevating work platforms  up to 90 metres in height and two operators certified in working at height.

TGM Cleaner

It consists of a system comprising a 1.5 m long 360º rotating semi-automatic cleaning brush, powered by high-pressure water (120-160 bar). The water is sprayed proportionally onto the surface with a very low consumption.

The equipment installs directly into the basket of the access platform and enables the cleaning of large surfaces very efficiently and in reduced times.

Absorbent pollutant waste barriers and permanent lifting electromagnets

To prevent polluting waste produced after cleaning from having a negative impact on the environment, we use absorbent waste booms contaminants attached to the perimeter of the wind turbine tower by a series of permanent lifting electromagnets.

The containment ring located at the base of the wind turbine tower prevents any spill residue from reaching the beach adjacent to the affected wind turbine tower. 

In the event of spot cleaning of the tower, a second containment ring shall be placed directly beneath the stain.

The discharged spillage will be absorbed by the containment barrier, preventing it from affecting the clean area of the tower shaft.

 

Once the cleaning is finished, we will proceed to remove the absorbent barriers, which will be transported to a waste management contractor who will carry out the corresponding treatment on them.

High-Pressure Washing Equipment

From the working basket of the mobile elevating work platform, the operator will work on the surface of the tower using specialised cleaning equipment.

This system is made up of a washing unit with an autonomous electric current generator that pumps the water.

Using a 200-bar high-pressure telescopic lance, work is carried out on the surface.

To make it easier for the oil to come off, we use hot water and biodegradable soap. It is worth noting that the water used in the cleaning process is recycled.
